The opportunity

About this role

Chimney & Fireplace Technician Apprentice

Earn While You Learn a Skilled Trade | $18–$25/hr

Not looking for just another job? Learn a trade. Build real skills. Create a career.

Smalling Masonry is looking for motivated people who want to work with their hands, learn a specialized skilled trade, and build toward becoming a Lead Technician.

You don't need years of chimney experience—we'll teach you the trade.

What we do want is someone who shows up, works hard, takes pride in what they do, asks questions, solves problems, and wants to keep getting better.

This isn't a classroom-only apprenticeship. You'll be earning a paycheck while learning alongside experienced technicians on real jobs throughout the Indianapolis area.

Where this career can take you

Our goal isn't to keep you an apprentice.

Our apprenticeship program is designed to develop skilled Journeyman Technicians and future leaders. As you master skills, earn industry certifications, and demonstrate that you're ready for more responsibility, you'll have opportunities to advance.

Our goal is to develop the right apprentice toward a Lead Technician position—as early as 18 months based on training, certifications, performance, and demonstrated ability.

Your growth is largely determined by what you put into it.

What You'll Learn

This isn't one repetitive construction job. You'll develop skills across multiple trades, including:

  • Chimney construction and rebuilding

  • Masonry and brickwork

  • Fireplace systems

  • Framing

  • Roofing and flashing

  • Chimney venting and liners

  • Gas fireplace service

  • Fireplace and chimney inspections

  • Fireplace appliance installation

  • Troubleshooting and repair

  • Customer communication

  • Jobsite safety and leadership

You'll learn not only how to perform the work, but how to diagnose problems, think through solutions, communicate with homeowners, and eventually take ownership of a job.

Who Does Well Here

We're looking for someone who wants to become really good at something.

You may be a great fit if you:

Take initiative. You don't need someone constantly telling you to find something productive to do.

Like figuring things out. You're naturally curious and enjoy troubleshooting problems.

Take pride in your work. “Good enough” isn't your standard.

Are dependable. Your team can count on you to show up on time and ready to work.

Want feedback. You'd rather have someone teach you how to improve than stay comfortable doing something incorrectly.

Want responsibility. As you prove yourself, you want the opportunity to lead—not avoid it.

Want a career, not just your next job. We're investing time and resources into training you, and we're looking for someone interested in growing with us.

What You'll Need

You don't need chimney experience.

We prefer at least one year of hands-on construction or mechanical experience, such as roofing, framing, masonry, gutters, plumbing, HVAC, appliance installation/repair, remodeling, or similar work.

You must also be comfortable:

Working outdoors in changing weather, climbing ladders and scaffolding, working safely on roofs and at heights, performing physical work, interacting professionally with homeowners, and learning new systems and skills.

A valid driver's license, acceptable driving history, reliable transportation to work, and the ability to meet company employment requirements are required.

Pay & Benefits

$18–$25/hour depending on experience

But your starting wage isn't intended to be where your career stops. As you develop skills, complete training, earn certifications, and take on greater responsibility, there are opportunities for increased compensation and advancement.

Benefits include:

  • Health insurance

  • Dental insurance

  • Vision insurance

  • Earned PTO

  • Paid holidays

  • Employer-paid life insurance

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Paid hands-on training

  • Industry certification opportunities

  • Defined path toward increased responsibility and leadership
